16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A Tornado of Starling Murmuration Birds

An incredible formation from thousands of Starling birds from the sky above. Almost like a tornado going to touch down with many birds.Seeing thousands of starlings flying together in a whirling, ever-changing pattern is a phenomenon of nature that amazes and delights those lucky enough to witness it. The speed, movements, and formations all connected together and work in a remarkable team effort without colliding with each other. The photo was taken at dusk on a cloudy day at Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area.
