14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
A vivid sunset gradient behind an iconic lifeguard tower on the beach.

The photo shows the silhouette of a lifeguard tower on my local beach in Santa Monica. The sunset that day made an amazing display of colors that I was able to capture. It is a simple photo but one with a lot of character and motivation to envision a positive future stemming from a sense of nostalgia. A sustainable travel project is one in which a minimalist approach in all aspects of the trip is taken, bringing little to no materialistic possessions in order to truly see the trip for what it is and to make a large effort to refrain from habitual consumption routines while assimilating into the local culture. This photo exemplifies my minimalist travel philosophy as all I use to move around is an old beach bicycle, my surfboard, and one trusty camera. Simplicity is bliss and refusal of modern consumption habits is a step towards taking a sustainable trip.
