A "voil janet" during the annual carnival parade in Aalst, Belgium

In this photo, a "voil janet" blows on a rams horn while he waits for the parade to pass during the first day of Carnival in Aalst, Belgium. "Oiljst Carnaval" is the biggest carnival event in Belgium, starting the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. The "voil jeanetten" or "dirty Jennies" are a traditional costume for the event where men don women's clothing and particular accessories, including a wig, lampshade hat, fur coat, and fake breasts. The tradition goes that because Aalst was previously a poor city, men could not afford the elaborate costumes worn in Vienna or Paris. To make due, the men would raid their wives' wardrobes for their costumes.
