17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Mobile
A winter morning on the Rhode Island coastline.
I found this piling, cut loose from its pier. The name of my hometown, Bristol, was painted on its face. Jutting out from cold, white-capped waves, it reminded me of my people. One foot on land, but the other always firmly planted in the water.
