A wolf spider lies on the bank of the Olentangy River in Columbus, OH

A wolf spider sits on the bank in a stagnant portion of the river, partially supported by the surface tension of the water. A dead water bug resting on the surface, no larger than a mosquito, provides some context for the size of the spider. Another tiny insect, which I did not notice at the time, is visible below the thorax
