14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A World Below The Surface

Walking on a trail in Scottsdale, Arizona I came across a hole with a ton of giant ants around it. Being from Michigan this was a unique site because normally the ants form hills and not direct holes into the ground. Seeing ants at slightly larger size gave me more perspective on the importance of their lives. That ants have their own way of living, societies, families, yet humans kill them everyday without knowing it.
