A young Burrunan dolphin checking weed floating at the surface for hiding fish
Port Phillip Bay's resident dolphins were only recently recognised as a new species; the Burrunan dolphin. While their true identity may have come as a surprise, their presence in the Bay is certainly no secret. They are as much part of the place as the vast sandy plains, seagrass meadows and rocky reefs, as well a being an icon for the region and a litmus test for the health of the marine environment that sustains them.
