A young silversword at the summit of Haleakalā, Maui

The photo shows the harsh conditions at the 10,000 ft. summit of Haleakalā, Maui, a sacred place to Native Hawaiians. The young silversword in the foreground can live from 15 to 50 years or more; it will bloom once and then die. Silverswords can be found only on Haleakalā, and on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii.
