Abandoned Salinas of Gozo

This abandoned salina was captured shortly after sunrise in Xwejni, a remote coastal town in Gozo. Traditional salt producing salina’s (salt pans) in the mediterranean have been on the decline since the 1950’s for a variety of reasons related to migration, economics, and the development of land for industrial, urbanization and tourism projects. Out of approximately 170 salina’s in the mediterranean region approximately 64 are inactive or abandoned.
