19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
abyss between us

Meanings emerge from perception, and perception is shaped by meanings coexisting only for each individual, abstracting reality, defining the abstract, giving life to the inanimate, making reality an illusion. The work addresses how meanings emerge in people, as the same artifact without undergoing physical transformations can have its meaning transformed depending on how we perceive it. What something means is not always consistent with reality, but it is the meaning that arouses emotions, it is the meaning that makes us feel, that shapes how we act, it is the meaning that matters, not the reality. The work reflects on the times that filters (a reference to social networks and also to human factors) shape the ways in which we see the world, where perception is distorted and sometimes makes us seem to fall into an unknown abyss. The proposal is related to the psyche theme of perception and meaning, the different ways of perceiving the same object, the different meanings that an artifact can have, and also the emotions that an artifact can arouse in the person. The images will be presented in red and blue, because, like, when using the filters (those from old 3D glasses), a part of the figure disappears, transforming the meaning of the image. The viewer is encouraged to reflect on how filters transform perception, how they transform meanings.
