23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Adaptation
In a typical daytime setting, tulips open their petals in response to heat and light, attracting pollinators. At night or on rainy days, as temperatures drop and light dims, tulips gradually close their petals, conserving energy and protecting their reproductive structures, a natural rhythm known as nyctinasty. For this image, I took a series of photos of the tulip as it was closing its petals in the dark, then layered the photos to give the final composite.
