19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Aerial view of silt flowing from the bank of an Oregon reservoir.

Flying aerial firewatch, navigating the sea, and hiking throughout Oregon have led me to myriad captivating views: some extraordinary and others alarming. Oregon became a state 162 years ago and has changed dramatically since its inception. A couple months after taking this image a wildfire broke out near this location. Later in the year a historic wind event brought fire through much of this already deforested landscape. From the airplane, I can see the enormous influence we have on the landscape; our story is being carved onto ancestral lands. My hope is that by sharing these images with you I can show you what lies beyond the tree line.
