Against All Odds

As the name suggests, the Violet Limodore is the only blue-violet orchid in Romania. The plants are, in some cases, very tall, with a violet tint, growing up to 120 centimeters, and completely lacking any true, green leaves. Its large flowers, open wide, resembling birds in flight. The Violet Limodore is quite mysterious and fascinating. It has a long subterranean life. After seed germination, the plantlets (young plants) develop very slowly, remaining entirely below ground for 8 to 10 years before producing the first flowering stem. It always prefers dark forests, away from direct sunlight. In Romania, this mysterious orchid is very rare (Orchids of Romania, by Nora De Angelli & Dan Anghelescu, 2020).
