15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
All eyes on me.

Hypsiboas picturatus is a stunning frog found in the Chocó region of northwest Ecuador and the western lowlands of Colombia. There are so many ways to photograph this beautiful species but I've always been a fan of their big eyes. When I found this one sitting on a leaf above a small stream I angled myself in such a way that the eyes would be the clear subject in frame. I used the leaf to my advantage to create a dynamic shot. The Chocó region is one of the most biodiverse and threatened regions in the world. Highlighting its beauty is critical to understanding what is being lost. Listed Vulnerable (Ecuadorian Red List, IUCN criteria)
