19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
All Hallows Eve
This photo shows one of the many intriguing rock formations at the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park. Set against a cloudy sky, I anticipated a moody, almost portent shot – the odd formation standing defiant and threatening in a barren landscape – but was pleasantly surprised when the image had turned out even better than I’d thought. It reminded me of the ‘Night on Bald Mountain’ sequence in Disney’s ‘Fantasia’ – spirits swirling around a demon-like conductor who stands mutinous atop the highest peak of this seismic wonder.
