I had spent the night at Rifugio Lagazuoi, one of the alpine huts in the Dolomites, and this one famous for its views and sunsets and sunrises. This was the last night of the season before the hut closed (until it reopened for skiers), and clouds came in and obscured the sunset and the ensuing sunrise. It was a special night up in the peaks, but a bust for photography. The morning was slow to come to light, and there was little to show for my stay. I was packing up my gear when the clouds broke and, while I had missed the sunrise, THIS was my reward! My tripod was already down-sized and I took this image hand-held before the clouds could come back in.
