18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Altyn Mountain Sand Sea Elf

The remoteness, high cold and lack of oxygen in the Altun Mountain National Nature Reserve allows the reserve to retain China’s unique and rare wild animals. The reserve is surrounded by high mountains, modern glaciers, plateau lakes, plateau deserts and a wide variety of Tibetan wilderness. Donkeys, Tibetan antelopes, wild yaks, wild camels and other rare birds and animals, together with a variety of wild plants, are the wonders of the plateau.
