Certain inland areas of Southeast Texas are home to American Alligators - lots of them! At one of my favorite state parks about 20 minutes from my home, you can consistently observe them in their natural habitat. They dwell in small freshwater lakes and swamps. Most people are amazed that there are no fences or barriers in the park to keep the alligators from coming right onto the foot trail, which happens frequently. My image captures a young alligator positioning a large Crawfish in its mouth - getting ready to swallow it whole. This is not a common sight but on this particular day, several of the small alligators (3-5 feet) were diving into the mucky bottom in search of these lobster-like morsels (which is one of the reasons they are referred to as "mudbugs"), then brining them to the surface to devour. Most of the time alligators are motionless for long periods of time, especially during the day, so it was a real treat to observe this feeding behavior.
