23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
American Bison and European Starlings

The American bison was once driven near extinction in the United States, but recent efforts have brought them back to a tiny bit of the original range. This herd of bison were reintroduced in the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge just outside of Denver, Colorado. The Arsenal was once a factory site for chemical weapons and rocket fuel, but it was cleaned up and is returning to nature for a wide variety of species including the bison. This image captured the herd and starlings in the warm early morning sun backlit them and the cloud of dust the herd was throwing into the air as they moved through the prairie. I focused on the starlings and used the hulking shapes of the bison as their backdrop. The starlings take advantage of the insects disturbed by the herd to get an easy meal.
