21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
American Pika with flowers

American Pikas live on high altitudes, where winters are long. They don't hibernate, so they need to stay busy all summer to collect food for the winter. They put the plants in stashes in a rocky area and then they will live off them under the snow until next growing season comes.
