13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
American WWII Airplanes

A scuba diver explores WWII American airplanes that were dumped at the end of the war. Not lost in battle, these Douglas Dauntless bomber planes were simply not needed after the war was finished and too expensive to send home. They rest peacefully at the bottom of Kwajalein lagoon in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
