18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Amish Gold

I live near Lancaster County, home of the Amish. I've seen their tobacco drying barns for years but never photographed them until this day. I wrote the Amish farmer a short note requesting permission to photograph in his barns without taking pictures of any people as that is against their religion. I sent the note with a self-addressed stamped envelop to his tiny vegetable stand. A week letter, I received his note back to me granting me permission. I spent half a day there. I offered a photograph of his barn but he told me - "No thank you, I know what it looks like." He did want a photograph of his plow horses. I was very happy to oblige.
