The Alae ʻUla or Hawaiian Common Moorhen is an endangered (pop. approximately 300), chicken-sized water bird, that today lives mostly on Oahu and Kauai. Ala ʻUla means "burnt forehead." According to legend, this bird brought fire from the gods to the people, burning its white forehead red in the process.
