13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
An alligator just before the plunge.
This alligator was hunting for fish. Every so often, it lifted its head out of the water, turned it sideways, opened its mouth, and then plunged into the water to catch a fish. I watched the alligator eat a few fish.
