16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
An ant makes it's way across an asian pear blossom

We thought this asian pear tree was dead since we are in a drought and have not been able to water it very often. When it suddenly sprouted leaves and blossoms soon followed, we were overjoyed. I have been photographing the stages of the tree all summer.
