21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
An Evolutionary Marvel

Marine iguanas are highly specialized to live in in the Galapagos Islands. They have adapted to the environment over thousands of years. This particular individual is from Espanola Island where males from this population turn bright green and red during the mating season. This also coincides with a specific type of algae that aids in their brighter than average pigment. Marine iguanas are also able to regulate their salt intake by sneezing! Which is what this iguana is doing after a long morning of grazing on algae in the ocean.
