14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Ancestors

This is a photograph taken in a cemetery in Upstate New York containing upwards of 10 generations of my family. My mother grew up down the street from it and only recently learned while doing our genealogy that we are related to every person in the rural cemetery that used to scare her so much growing up. The pictured graves captivated me especially, though, because they are covered in poison sumac toward the woods. Thus, their inhabitants' identities are, sadly, effectively lost.
