14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Anchovy Processing Factory, Peru

An small anchovy processing factory provides jobs to members of the Paracas community, a village situated at a two-hour drive south of Lima. The majority of the employees are women head of households, often the only breadwinners of their families. Although the job is hard, they welcome the opportunity to earn an income higher than what jobs traditionally held by women - such as housekeeping - would allow them to do.
