Ancient Mosque in the modern city of Baku, Azerbaijan

Generally, Azerbaijan isn't on people's radars. However, a wealth of stunning locations can be found this country only for those who are curious enough to travel and explore its wonders.  It must be said that Baku, the country's capital, is one of the curious cities of the region. Most of the country remains rural or untouched, yet Baku has thrived and grown exponentially to be comparable to big cities from Europe.  Featuring Soviet influences, Eastern cultures, and European ambitions, the city stands out as a one-of-a-kind place. The city's modern development has been a renaissance of architecture, with each new structure mimicking the last in obscurity. This trend sits side by side with perfectly preserved medieval structures, creating a veneer that spans millennia.  Magic happens in Baku, where the old meets the new and the east meets the west.
