Anna's Humming over the last 1/2 century or so have expanded from a SE Desert Specialty to a (breeding & lesser winter) range now extending into British Columbia and west through Nevada and Arizona. They are incredibly adaptive. One winter with a week of single digit temperatures at my place SE of Portland a single female roosted in the low vegetation on the ground (ground heat?) and flew to the feeder on our front porch as soon as I put the feeder out for the day at first light. I take every chance I get to photograph them in temperature extremes. Which, by the way, this photo was not. The temperature was in the 20's and that apparently wasn't even cool for this male. All the while the world around him was covered with ice.
