15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Antarctica VI, Whales, Antarctic Peninsula
This image of a pod of Killer Whales was taken from an eco-tourism shop named the Ocean Endeavor. The location is in the Antarctic Sound near the Shetland Islands. During this trip, I was able to observe both Humpback Whales and Killer Whales. For quite a few visitors to Antarctica, spotting all types of whales is one of the most exciting highlights of the voyage. These whales shadowed the ship long and close enough to get unforgettable images.
