20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Ants sniffing one another out
One afternoon while scanning the peony plants, this photograph was taken. It is an interaction between two Carpenter ants sniffing each other out, making sure they are from the same colony. These interactions are usually very brief so it was a stroke of luck to capture it.
