'Apapane with ʻumikoa, seen on Puʻu ʻŌʻō Trail
This ʻApapane, a nectar-feeding member of the Hawaiian honeycreeper family, was seen in a forest kipuka on Puʻu ʻŌʻō Trail on the Island of Hawaiʻi. In the past, when the forest birds were abundant, the bright crimson feathers of the ʻApapane were used to make capes and other feather works for Hawaiian nobility or aliʻi.
