Appleby-in-Westmoreland hosts the largest annual Gipsy and Traveller gathering in Europe. The rhythm of the day follows a familiar pattern each year. Horse trading and racing up on "The Flash", browsing stalls in the Fair Field, then down to the river to watch horses ridden bareback into the river to cool.
