april 25th

This photograph captures a symbolic moment during the commemoration of April 25th, known in Portugal as Freedom Day. On this date in 1974, the Carnation Revolution ended decades of dictatorship and restored democracy and civil liberties to the Portuguese people. In the image, two hands of different skin tones rise above the crowd, each holding a red carnation, the flower that became the symbol of the revolution. Soldiers placed carnations in their rifle barrels instead of bullets, showing that change could be achieved peacefully. The picture expresses the unity, diversity, and lasting spirit of freedom that April 25th represents in Portugal today. It celebrates both history and the collective strength that keeps democracy alive.
