UNQUIET FLOWS THE ULHAS RIVER

The Ulhas river, which flows from the Wester Ghats down to the Arabian Sea, turns pink near the city of Kalyan in Mumbai, as millions of liters of sewage and industrial effluents flow in daily from the towns and industries near its banks. The Kalyan-Dombivali region, located in the exurbs of Mumbai, has seen a boom in populational and industries in the past few decades that has rapidly outstripped infrastructure. A local NGO has filed a court case over the pollution in the river which is now being heard by the country’s Supreme Court.
