Climbing over a Deserted Fortress Wall in the Peruvian Desert
In the past summer, my team, the Cerro Prieto Espinal Project from the University of Toronto, has been documenting fortification walls and sites in the North Coast Region of Peru. This picture depicts a fortified wall on a ridgeline that was buried by a millennia of wind-blown sand from the vast desert of this coastal region. This site dates to the Moche-Chimu-Inka Period (500-1452 CE) and was likely one of several fortresses the Chimu and Inka Empires had to overcome.
