The arctic fox is the only native mammal in Iceland. With a low life expectancy, it must survive days without night and nights without day in a land that has little more to offer than cold and scarcity of food. Its size and the design of its organism allow it to tolerate extreme temperatures, while its hearing and smell abilities makes it easier for him to find food from miles away, being able to feed on everything its stomach can digest (meat, fish, plants, eggs and even seaweed). After a past of indiscriminate killings for their precious fur and for the misleading belief that this animal was a pest, currently the Icelandic foxes are protected in the Hornstrandir peninsula, where the blue morph stands out on the white morph, due to a better camouflage for hunting on the coast. The young are born at the end of May, and before the end of summer they must be prepared to survive the winter.
