Aschura

This photo shows the celebration of the Ashura festival in Isfahan. With this festival the Shiites commemorate the murder of the Imam Hussein. The picture shows an area reserved for women and children. To symbolize the martyrdom of the Imam lances with red cloths are placed in the field of candles. Sad melodies and the sound of wailing women waft over, creating an atmosphere of almost tangible tension.
