16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Ashes
This is a formation made up of 60 years' worth of layered volcanic ash at the Capelinhos, located on the Azorean island of Faial. I found it while hiking off-trail, exploring the ashy dunes that are shaped by a fierce wind off the ocean.
