On the western coast of Bahrain island, lays Al-Malikya village, which is known of its beach and palms. The smoke of the burning dry palm leaves and tree trunks fills the sky during the first ten days of Muharram (the 1st month in the Arabic calendar) every year. The smoke rises in the sky from 7 in the morning until sunset. The men and women of the village gather around giant cooking pans (around 15 pans) working collaboratively to serve the people under the name of Imam Hussain the 2nd grandson of prophet Mohammed and the spiritual sponsor of this event. The food is prepared passionately to the attendees of Majalis Ala’aza, from the 1st til the 13th day of Muharram. Many villages and houses around would depend on the food cooked and served during this time. And it is worth to mention that Malikya is quite special as they still use the dried palm leaves (Sa’af) for cooking, and you would see men and women work side by side in the process which is something rare when comparing it to the other villages in Bahrain.
