12th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Aspens’ autumn gold

These trees were in a riparian area in Lee Vining. After a few days of seeing primarily the desert of Death Valley, it was refreshing to see numerous aspen trees growing by a stream. Their leaves were the most vivid yellow I’ve seen.
