21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Astrid Emperors

Emperor penguins in the Astrid emperor penguin colony located at the edge of the Nivl Ice Shelf in Queen Maud Land. The colony was discovered in a review of satellite imagery in 2009 but to our knowledge had never previously been visited. Accordingly, this is one of the very first images of the colony to be published. I was able to obtain aerial images to share with a leading emperor penguin science to determine the number of chicks in the colony and establish an estimate of colony size with a high degree of confidence (which until now was not possible through use of satellite imagery only). A true privilege and honor to be the first to lay eyes on this incredible scene.
