17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
At Anchor
A schooner at anchor off Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Christiansted was once the capital of the Danish West Indies, but they were sold to America in 1917 to deny German U-boats a base in the Caribbean during WWI. Ever since then, they have been a popular destination for Americans on holiday. I really like the sense of tranquility this shot evokes.
