19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
At the end of the trail, Parfrey's Glen.

Parfrey's Glen, Wisconsin's first State Natural Area(1952), is a spectacular gorge deeply incised into the sandstone of the south flank of the Baraboo Hills. Parfrey's Glen Creek, is a fast, cold, hardwater stream that flows through the gorge and harbors a very diverse insect fauna including rare species of diving beetles and caddisflies. After a decade of regular “100 year” floods, the DNR stopped spending on trail maintenance within the gorge. Hikers wishing to continue up to the waterfall must navigate a stream and rough stone.
