20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Autumn on the Kettle River, Northeast Washington State
With autumn colors showing strong in the Kettle River Valley, I was out with camera on hand just before the afternoon sun settled behind a nearby mountain range. These cottonwood leaves caught in the shallows caught my attention as well.
