18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The spine of Shiprock is an ancient lava tube that fed the volcano when it erupted. The peak is 7,178 above sea level, and is at the center of three volcanic pressure ridges that pushed the rock skyward millennia ago.
