This species of salamander is endemic of northern Italy, and it is one of only two species of this genus of salamander, the Salamandrina sp. genus. The other species Salamandrina terdigitata lives only in the southern part of Italy. Like most of the salamanders lives in wet forest, near stream or little ponds where the females go to lay eggs, usually adherent small dead branches. The species is only long about ten centimeters, with tail. Its name spectacled salamander born from the white mark that every animal has on the head, over the eyes, It is if they were wearing glasses. The belly is white and red, an aposematic combination of colors that, together with unken reflex (the ostentation of these colors when in danger), allows the animal to warn predators.
