The wayang or shadow puppet is popular theatrical expression in Bali. In a performance, flat cut-out figures are silhouetted against a translucent, white screen, with a coconut-husk lamp as its source of light. Often these performances depict hindu stories and folklore. In this photo a young Balinese boy offers up a prayer into the back of his puppet before practicing his art in front of his family in the village of Budakelin.
