Barefoot Bedouin crossing the White Desert in Egypt
Barefoot Bedouin crossing the White Desert in Egypt at sunset northeast of Farafra, on the land where his family has lived for centuries. I was hiking with him and a small group for a week across the desert, an ancient seabed with a floor of sand, white chalk rocks, fossilized seashells, crystals and small black lava rocks. This land, known locally as Sahara el Beyda, has been a protected area in a national park since 2002 and access is limited. He worries about the influence of consumerism on the Bedouin tradition of sharing everything, and he and other families fiercely protect this precious, ancient landscape. "Sometimes I go into the desert alone just to walk, and I cry." No words followed.
